Provide a Canadian address at your first landing and your PR card will be directly mailed to that address. If you did not provide your Canadian mailing address when you became a permanent resident, use our online address notification tool to send it to us. You must provide your address within 180 days of the day you become a permanent resident. If you do not send it within 180 days, your PR card will be cancelled and you will have to apply for another one and pay the processing fees. Permanent resident card is usually issued for five years, but can sometimes be issued for one year instead. It is valid until the expiry date listed on the card. IRCC only mail PR cards to applicants addresses within Canada. In some cases, some people will need to pick up their PR cards in person at designated IRCC office. Applicant must pick up the card within 180 days. If you fail to do so, your card will be destroyed and you have to reapply. To keep your permanent resident status, you must have been in Canada for at least 730 days during the last five years. These 730 days don’t need to be continuous. The PR Card and Becoming a Citizen The PR card is valid for 5 years. If the card bearer becomes a citizen within 5 years after the card is issued, the PR card will automatically void. If the card bearer remains a permanent resident when the PR card expires, he or she needs to reapply for a new PR card.
